Financial aid that graduate students could apply for includes grants, scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships. Many of these competitive offerings are awarded based on merit or need. Funding opportunities are offered both through Colorado State University (CSU) and external organizations. 

The Office for Scholarship and Fellowship Advising (OSFA) assists current students interested in applying for external awards.  Find more information about external awards and awards that require a University nomination on the OFSA website.

CSU Scholarships

Advancing Education Scholarship - honoring the legacy and memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The scholarship is awarded each year to one Colorado State University graduate student.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Program Scholarship

CSU offers four program awards to cover one-half of nonresident tuition for international graduate students of any discipline and from any Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economy.

Non-CSU Scholarships

American Nuclear Society (ANS)

Scholarships are open to ANS student members enrolled in a course of study relating to a degree in nuclear science or nuclear engineering.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Loveland Branch Graduate Scholarship

This is a $1,000 graduate scholarship for a woman currently or formerly residing in the Loveland-Berthoud area. Candidates must demonstrate a financial need to be considered for this award.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship Programs

A non-profit and non-partisan educational organization established to develop the next generation of Latino leaders. CHCI seeks to accomplish this by offering educational and leadership development programs, services, and activities that promote the growth of its participants as effective professionals and strong leaders.

Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship

Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) is a DoD Scholarship Program for STEM students. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense after graduation. Applications are open annually from Aug. 1 – Dec. 1 

Harry Frank Guggenheim Emerging Scholar Awards

Available only to students for support during the final year of Ph.D. studies to support research that investigates the basic mechanisms in the production of violence, but primacy is given to proposals that make a compelling case for the relevance of potential findings for policies intended to reduce these ills. 

Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

Since 1981 the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF), a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, public charity, has awarded scholarships to outstanding women from developing countries, who are completing degrees at US/Canadian universities and are committed to improving the wellbeing of women and children in developing countries.

McNair Scholars Program

Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements. Institutions encourage participants to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.

National Potato Council Auxiliary Scholarship

Each year, the Potato Leadership, Education and Advancement Foundation (Potato LEAF) awards one $10,000 academic scholarship to a graduate student with strong interest in research that can directly benefit the potato industry.

CSU Fellowships

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The goal of the program is to broaden participation of the full spectrum of diverse talents in STEM. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000.

National Science Foundation Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship Program

Funded through the National Science Foundation, this two-year program is designed to support students in persistence and successful completion of their STEM doctoral degrees. The BD program is administered through the Graduate Center for Inclusive Mentoring. The Fellowship is not available in 2024.

Summer Graduate Thesis or Dissertation Completion Fellowship

This Fellowship supports graduate students completing their theses, dissertations, and achieving academic milestones in the summer, providing financial support during the crucial stages of thesis or dissertation completion.

Non-CSU Fellowships

American Association for the Advancement of Science: Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program

This 10-week summer program places science, engineering, and mathematics students at media organizations nationwide. Fellows use their academic training as they research, write, and report today’s headlines, sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific issues to the public.

American Education Research Association Funding Opportunities

The opportunities are specific to students conducting research in education. 

American Association of University Women

Since 1888, AAUW has been one of the largest funders of women’s graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world. Fellowship and grant recipients perform research in a wide range of disciplines and work to improve their schools and communities.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

ACLS holds competitions for several fellowship and grant competitions.

American Councils for International Education

Grants for Research and Advanced Language Training programs to support collaborative education with some of the world’s most strategically important nations and regions. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for these awards.

Boren Graduate Fellowships

Boren Scholars and Fellows study a wide range of critical languages and immerse themselves in the cultures of world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Fellowships are intended to support U.S. graduate students who will pursue the study of languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government. 

Chateaubriand Fellowship

The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States. It supports outstanding PhD students from U.S institutions who wish to conduct part of their doctoral research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months. The Fellowship is divided into two subprograms: one focused on the Humanities and Social Sciences, and another focused on STEM studies. 

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

This graduate fellowship is a full-time hands-on training and educational program that provides early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation. 

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Fellowship Programs

A non-profit and non-partisan educational organization established to develop the next generation of Latino leaders. These fellowships work to develop and empower a new generation of Latino leaders who are ready to shake up local communities, the halls of Congress, and corporate boardrooms.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an immersive summer opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

Fogarty Program

A directory of grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral research, maintained by the Fogarty International Center. 

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to assist the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for ETA Programs can apply to only one country. 

Hertz Foundation Fellowship Awards

The Hertz Fellowship is awarded annually to the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. Using a rigorous, merit-based process, they identify innovators with the greatest potential to create transformative solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges. Awardees receive five years of funding and the freedom to pursue innovative ideas wherever they may lead. 

Humboldt Research Fellowship

The Humboldt Research Fellowship for researchers of all nationalities and research areas: We support you – postdoctoral and experienced researchers – with your research in Germany.

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (GFSD)

Founded in 1989 “To increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in STEM fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool.”  GFSD provides graduate stipends, paid internships, and support to fellows. 

National Research Council Research Associateship Programs

The NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) are prestigious postdoctoral and senior research awards designed to provide promising scientists and engineers with high-quality research opportunities at federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These programs offer a comprehensive experience, including mentorship, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and opportunities to influence government policy, all geared toward enhancing the research career development of the Research Associates.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Science Education Programs

Financial support resources for graduate students. Bridge to the Doctorate, IGERT and NSF Grad Research Fellowship programs provide generous stipend and tuition support for students through the National Science Foundation.

The Mitchell Scholars Program

The Mitchell Scholars Program is a national competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

These fellowships honor the contributions of immigrants and children of immigrants to the United States and support 30 individuals a year for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere in the U.S. Students already in graduate study are eligible, though not past their second year. Candidates must be either holders of Green Cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents. 

L’Oréal USA For Women In Science

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women postdoctoral scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each for their contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations.

Department of Military Science

The ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 provides for a two-year ROTC program in addition to the traditional four-year program and authorizes ROTC scholarships. Learn more in the Division of Armed Forces Services catalog. Details of the scholarship program may be obtained online through the Air Force and Army, and from the ROTC department concerned. Refer to the department listings for names of persons who can supply additional information.
